The Wonders of Magic by Marc Faubel of Hershey Magic
There is a common misconception between going to see a large magic event on stage such as David Copperfield, or Lance Burton vs. watching Criss Angel or David Blaine perform magic on the street for strangers. The misconception is that the Stage Magic show is just that; a show, whereas, Street Magic is a way to demonstrate the supernatural. Magic on the street is much more intimate, usually involving small objects that are borrowed, or a pack of common playing cards. Magic on the stage is a performance of well-crafted effects designed for the specific purpose of amazing you. Stage Magic is often done for a large audience, where there is a theme and several large illusions that give the impression
that a man can fly or be sawed in half and just as easily come back together and stand up to take a bow. On the street a similar effect may be seen with a small bird where the head is removed and then placed back on the animal’s neck so the bird may live again.
To witness magic in any form is nothing short of amazing, bringing us willingly into a world of the unknown. The magician must be a master of their art, be it Stage or Street Magic, and must hone their craft to ensure the most amount of wonder, amazement and mystery. Both of these forms have their drawbacks and their strengths. Street Magic is very powerful because it’s on the spot and up close, but it has its limitations. Grand illusions can only be performed in the most controlled settings. To fly around Central Park would be infinitely more difficult a task then to fly around a Broadway theater for example. By the same token, Stage Magic allows us to witness the large scale impossible feat such as instantly switching places with someone else on the opposite side of the stage or appearing in a ball of flames.
Whichever form of magic you prefer, if you set yourself up to be entertained, chances are you will be. The only mistake to be made is to believe the magician is only out to make you feel silly by “tricking” you. A magician wants nothing more then to make you forget about day to day life and bring you a little piece of wonder. Magic is beautiful in every way it’s performed: close-up or in an auditorium for 1000 people. It’s mystifying, fun and exciting. No matter what you see, things are never as they seem and that is what allows us to be brought together through magic for that one moment. So, the next time you see a magician performing his art, try not think about how he/she did it, instead, try to appreciate the fact that some things cannot be explained and that is what makes them wonderful.
